In the summer of 2003, the Shoot the Hoop, Inc. Summer Reading Camp opened its doors to more than 100 students at two locations – Palmetto Elementary School and the Temple of Prayer Church.
During the 5 years since its inception, Shoot the Hoop, Inc has touched the lives of more than 500 “at-risk” youth in the Atlanta area, focusing, initially on reading and math competency, then moving toward a more aggressive goal of helping students pass the Georgia Criterion Referenced Competency Test or CRCT.
Shoot the Hoop, Inc is dedicated to helping inner city youth realize their full potential by working with school, family and school organizations to surround these children with an opportunity to become more than their situation.
Shoot the Hoop, Inc.’s stance is that “at-risk” youth most often come from “at-risk” families. In an effort to avoid the reversal of the positive environment Shoot the Hoop provides its participants, Shoot the Hoop, Inc. includes outreach services to the families of participants, including programs such as counseling, case management parenting classes and workshops, and makes referrals to external agencies to provide additional help and resources.
Shoot the Hoop, Inc. is committed to building better communities, and will do what is necessary to help families into a stable environment where they can raise their children. Shoot the Hoop, Inc. Family Services staff hopes to help families find housing, employment and other basic needs requirement as part of that commitment.
Shoot the Hoop Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non profit community organization that provides comprehensive academic and mentoring services for students who are considered "at-risk.” The organization is dedicated to helping inner city youth realize their full potential working with school, family and community organizations. Shoot the Hoop, Inc. provides opportunities for personal and academic success; bringing hope to young people, individually, and enhancing the quality of community life.
Shoot the Hoop, Inc. has always recognized that “at-risk” youth often come from “at-risk” families; the positive work we do with young people during and after school can easily be unraveled by an unhealthy situation in the home. For this reason, Shoot the Hoop, Inc. Programs include outreach services to ensure that whole families are being touched. Family programs include group and individual counseling, case management, parenting and budgetary classes, and referrals to external resources. In many cases, the Shoot the Hoop, Inc. Family Service Staff will help a parent find housing, employment, and additional counseling models to provide a safe, nurturing environment for their children. Shoot the Hoop, Inc. is proud to offer these wrap-around services that have led to touching the lives of more than 1,000 children and their families throughout the Metro Atlanta area over the past seven years.
